LIONESA GROUP, MAIN SPONSOR OF THE VATICAN PAVILION AT THE 2023 VENICE BIENNALE, BRINGS TO PORTUGAL ART PIECES BY SIZA VIEIRA

2023-05-19

For the first time, a national business group is sponsoring the pavilion of the Holy See, supporting the sculptural creation of the biggest Portuguese name in architecture, in one of the world's largest design and architecture events, the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

Half of the works designed by architect Siza Vieira that question the theme "Social Friendship" and that will be on display in Venice between May 20th and November 26th, will then come to Portugal to populate the cross-border project "Caminho da Arte" in the Portuguese Ways of St. James.

Whether by "godcidence", as Cardinal Dom Tolentino de Mendonça, commissioner of the Vatican Pavilion, said, or just by chance, the destinies of Lionesa Group and the Vatican crossed paths when the "Caminho da Arte" project was presented.

With the common denominator Siza Vieira, the architect invited for the re-qualification of the Monastery of Leça do Balio, an asset of Lionesa Group, and also to conceive the first landmark of this cross-border project, "Caminho da Arte" in the Ways of St. James, was also the artist invited by the Vatican to interpret the theme in exhibition, "Social Friendship".

This shared vision of art as a path to spirituality and personal development, interpreted by the same author, has led to Lionesa Group becoming the main Sponsor of the Vatican Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale.

It is also related to the "Caminho da Arte" project that 5 of the 10 sculptures designed by the architect will come to Portugal after the Biennale closes, and will be exhibited at Balio, a space dedicated to culture and critical thinking, while the rest will be under the management of the Vatican museums.
