Press Releases

On November 3rd, at 9pm, Enrique Vila-Matas will be Livraria Lello's November Author of the Month. The award-winning Spanish writer will be at the World's Most Beautiful Bookshop to talk about his literary career.

Enrique Vila-Matas was born in 1948 in Barcelona. In 1968, at the age of 20, he moved to Paris, self-exiled from Franco's government and in search of greater creative freedom. For a few years, he worked as a journalist for the magazine "Fotogramas" and even collaborated as an extra in a James Bond film.

Enrique Vila-Matas published his first book, La Asesina Ilustrada, in 1977 and since then he has never stopped writing because, according to him, "writing is correcting life, it's the only thing that protects us from the wounds and blows of life."

With the publication of História Abreviada da Literatura Portátil, he began to be recognized and admired internationally, especially in Latin American countries and Portugal.

Enrique Vila-Matas' works are a combination of essay, journalistic chronicle, and novel. His literature, fragmentary and ironic, blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality. He has developed a wide-ranging narrative oeuvre that began in 1973 and has so far been translated into nine languages.

Livraria Lello was officially voted "The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World" in 2023 by the global platform One Thousand Libraries (1000 Libraries), the largest online community of library and bookshop fans in the world. However, it was Enrique Vila-Matas who first referred to Livraria Lello as "the Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World" in an article published in El País in 2006.

Today, the author is one of the Spanish storytellers most praised by national and international critics. Livraria Lello will host an intimate talk with the writer, to which all book lovers are invited.

The session is free, subject to registration. It will also be possible to watch the event via livestreaming on Livraria Lello's Facebook page.
