Press Releases

The Art for Art movement, created by Lionesa Group, joined the project Outro Lugares, from Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, and SIGN to present Lugar Cativo, an exhibition open to the city, of a selection of works from the museum's collection.

The exhibition's opening is scheduled for the 29th, at 3:30 pm, at Rua do Cativo, in Porto, and will be presided over by the Secretary of State for Culture, Isabel Cordeiro.

Lugar Cativo is a set of portraits that gaze at the city and the viewer, a two-way observation between the character represented and his audience, and vice versa, in a dialog tailored to each person. These 40 or so artworks are reproductions placed on the façades of buildings.

Reinforcing the Museum's motto “A museum of people, by people for people”, the Outro Lugares program aims to continue the itinerancy, in the territory, of the collections of Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (MNSR) with partner entities. The action aims to go beyond the Museum's space and its formal organization to involve unlikely and differentiating curators taking into account the nature of the partners, the presentation location and their respective contexts.

The selection of artworks that will be on display in Rua do Cativo over the next few months for those who pass through the street to enjoy, finds in Cativo a space dedicated to cultural democracy. This is a joint initiative between Lionesa Group, Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis and SIGN - Wide Format Printing.

The exhibition also marks the 1st anniversary of Lionesa Group and continues the Art for Art initiative, a movement that belongs to all of those who see in art a magnifying glass on the territory, a stethoscope on the other, a stereoscope on an entire community.

About Art for Art project

The Art for Art movement began with investment in buildings on the historic Rua do Loureiro, in Porto. Temporarily blocked by health security and municipal guidelines, Lionesa Group began the intervention to requalify the building, opening the street to the city through art. Five artistic interventions were the result of the partnership with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP). This first initiative provided a true open-air art gallery, completely open to visitors and local inhabitants of Rua do Loureiro.

Now follows the Lugar Cativo project, which will continue the Art for Art Movement, in partnership with Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (MNSR) and SIGN, with a very clear goal of transforming the territory into a center for sharing culture, life and art.

About Outros Lugares project

Outros Lugares program aims to affirm Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis as a place that goes beyond its formal space and organization to involve unlikely and differentiating curators taking into account the nature of the partners, the presentation location and their respective contexts.

As part of this program, the Exhibition 42 DRAWINGS BY ANTÓNIO CARNEIRO TO DANTE'S HELL has already been presented at Casa dos Livros, in Porto; and the Cycle of Life Exhibition, which, based on the allegory FOUR SEASONS, a series of four canvases from the 17th century, took to the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP), a nucleus of paintings that establish a relationship with the different phases of a Human Being’s life.

The project Lugar Cativo materializes a new model for managing Cultural Heritage by the association of public entities and private entities, in an effort to increasingly democratize access to culture and to confront the public with works of art in unlikely spaces, seeking to encourage visits to the artworks in their formal exhibition context at Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis.
